FREE SUMMER TOURS AT HARTFORD¹S ANCIENT BURYING GROUND
HARTFORD - The Ancient Burying Ground Association is again offering guided tours of Hartford's oldest surviving historic site from noon to 2 p.m.
daily, Monday through Friday, beginning Monday, July 6, and continuing through Friday, August 14, weather permitting. The public is invited to stop by the Ancient Burying Ground, the city's oldest surviving landmark, located at Main and Gold Streets. Tours are free, and no reservation is necessary.
The Association¹s Student Summer Tour Guide Program is designed to enhance the visitor experience by interpreting Hartford¹s oldest remaining historic site in the larger context of the city, and to provide students with a valuable learning experience while developing real-world job skills. The eight-week program begins in June with two weeks of guide training and historical investigation, after which the students will begin offering tours. Tours will include information on the site itself and on the fascinating people who helped the city grow.
The four student tour guides, drawn from Classical and Hartford Middle Magnet Schools, are Benjamin Harlee, Shania Myers, Khalil Abrams-Harris and Tiffany Mitchell. All are Hartford residents, and during the interview process all showed a keen interest in history and in exploring different facets of Hartford¹s social evolution. Tiffany indicated that she hopes to learn how changing religious beliefs affected the city; Benjamin wants to determine how certain individuals¹ lives helped better the world; Khalil is interested in investigating people¹s work as well as their causes of death; Shania wants to focus on the details of everyday life.
Andrea Ader, a teacher, tour guide and public relations professional, will help the guides learn about the city¹s nearly four centuries of historical development and the important roles played by those buried in the Ancient Burying Ground as well as those who came after.
